Why LOVE
2022?

Canada is a Dirty Word

It's been more than 155 years since Canada's genocidal start and, at best, the Government of Canada (GoC) has only completed 8 of the 76 actions it is directly or jointly accountable for, regarding the 94 Calls to Action, since 2015 when the Truth & Reconciliation Commission of Canada released its Final Report.

The GoC's progress is beyond slow, lacking accountability, transparency, and the immediacy it requires. By participating in LOVE 2022, you will become more informed about what can be done individually and collectively to help ensure the GoC and all guests on Turtle Island do what is right, in a good way, for Truth and (re)Conciliation. Your participation will also help to show Indigenous Peoples how much you care!

Kanien'kéha!

The Truth

The Honourable Murray Sinclair, former Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, stated “Education got us into this mess and education will get us out of it.”

LOVE 2022 is an educational platform to bring Indigenous Peoples and their allies together, in a good way, to face the Truth and take action for true (re)Conciliation to happen, for the betterment of All Our Relations!

Chi-Miigwetch!

(re)Conciliation

Aligned with the words of Chief Joseph, “If we can all reconcile ourselves as human beings, we hold the hope that the future will be brighter,” LOVE 2022 is one of many ways to activate a greater connection with ourselves and each other, helping to eradicate oppression and make a brighter future for All Our Relations!

Snachailya!

Truth-Tellers.

Stay tuned for more truth-telling announcements, for change-making, in the near future!

TIME-SPACE.

A stellar roster of truth-tellers who share their change-making journeys with, and for, Mother Earth, Father Sky, Grandfather Sun, Grandmother Moon, and Humxnity.

We are deeply honoured that Elder Ma-Nee Chacaby is featured on the cover of Superstar X Magazine, and shares her perspective on what she'd like everyone to do for Truth and Reconciliation.

The Truth in Truth and Reconciliation

Through the context of Darin James Corbiere's multimedia art, he shares his inspiring journey to create an educational resource in the form of a board game to teach about "The Truth in Truth and Reconciliation."

Darin was a former police officer and a secondary school teacher in Ontario. When the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's Final Report was released in 2015, the Ontario Teachers Secondary School Federation put together a group of Indigenous educators to design a toolkit to teach the Federation's members.

So, Darin created a board game called "The Truth in Truth and Reconciliation." It is a trivia game that teaches about the true relationship between Canada and Indigenous Peoples who live here. He has started a Go Fund Me so that he can GIVE AWAY copies of the board game and a 100-page "Genuine Indian Guidebook."

Building on Lynda's book, this Truth Talk will provide "an overview of the day-to-day lives of Indigenous people, traditional Indigenous communities, colonial interventions used in an attempt to assimilate Indigenous people into mainstream society, the impacts those interventions had on Indigenous families and communities, and how Indigenous people are working towards holistic health and wellness today." Lynda's work helps to inform and inspire everyone along their ongoing journey of Truth and (re)Conciliation.

Film Soup

Each of these pieces was created by Sarah McPherson using an experimental film process called Film Soup. This process is a very broad and open-ended experimental photography medium that allows the voices of non-verbal elements to take a new visual shape.

In Sarah's work, she aims to explore the relationships we all have with the land and waters around us. In a modern world dominated by technology and amenities, it’s easy to believe that we are separate from the natural world; her work is an exploration of how untrue that really is.

Come join us at The X Gallery for a special guided tour of Film Soup! Learn more about how Sarah works to represent the duality present between what it means to be a person and what it means to be alive relative to the natural world.

In this Truth Talk, as the Director of Education and Chair of Global Education for AGPI, Neil will be sharing “Power of One” initiative, which illustrates how one person can "take action to make the world a better place." Among the "Power of One" contributors is Cogwagee (Thomas Charles Longboat), who was an Onondaga distance runner from the Six Nations Reserve near Brantford, Ontario.

The Wood Speaks to Me

James Darin Corbiere, an Anishinaabe, Bear Clan, originally from Wikwemikong on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, shares his healing journey through art. Darin grew up on the reserve where he used to be able to see colours around people until bad things happened at the Church. The sight stopped.

Then, he turned 50 and realized he was tired of running; so he decided to do some healing work. The colours came back, and it was in his artwork that he began expressing the colours he sees. His artwork has helped him to heal, predominantly in the medium of wood that shows him the way.

LOVE 2022 Closing Ceremony

A special ceremony to close LOVE 2022 in a good way.

Among LOVE 2022's featured guests, Kym Gouchie and Jessica McDiarmid will be attending... and more to be announced soon!

Kym Gouchie, musician and artist, and Jessica McDiarmid, author and journalist, met along a walk, "Cleansing the Highway," from Prince Rupert to Prince George, which took 17 days to complete. Organized by Brenda Wilson, the purpose of this walk was to create more awareness about the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) crisis and inspire more actions to solve the cases and ultimately prevent this pervasive violence from happening.

To help further awareness, Jessica wrote the book, Highway of Tears, which chronicles "A True Story of Racism, Indifference and the Pursuit of Justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls," and Kym Gouchie's art of the same name is on the book's cover.

We invite you inside The X Gallery to learn more about this journey and to purchase a limited edition art print to support the important work needed to prevent the MMIWG crisis from continuing.
